Einstein-Riemann Spacetime:
Introducing Curvature

A. Einstein
(this is a real picture)
Ten years after his first papers on special relativity, Einstein published his work on General Relativity. In an attempt to describe the phenomenon of gravitation, he generalized the notion of the Einstein-Minkowski Spacetime.
G.F.B. Riemann
(1826-1866)
developed a branch of mathematics (now known as Riemannian Geometry) that deals with curved spaces in two, three, or more dimensions.

from Wheeler (A Journey into Spacetime)
Einstein used this new mathematics to describe gravitation, not by a force, but by the curvature of spacetime. This has the effect of allowing the Light Cones to be arranged non-uniformly.
